The Future of Healthcare in the Upper Peninsula

Formed in July of 2010, the vision of Superior Health Partners is to create an integrated partnership that provides the highest value healthcare. The mission is that SHP continually improves the health of those it serves.

SHP goals were created to support the vision and mission of SHP. Our goals are to be the regional leader in clinical quality care and service, create business excellence, and develop an accountable care organization.

In a quest to reach its vision, SHP pledges to enhance quality of care, coordinate access to care and grow Upper Peninsula jobs while preparing for healthcare reform.

Prepare for Healthcare Reform

An Accountable Care Organization (ACO), is a health system model with the ability to provide, and manage with patients, the continuum of care across different institutional settings. ACOs will have the capability of planning budgets and resources and will be of sufficient size to support comprehensive, valid, and reliable performance measurement.

Superior Health Partners is focusing on developing and launching an ACO and is already in a position to discuss its advantages with U.P. employers.

Grow Upper Peninsula Jobs

Healthcare is the number one employer in the Upper Peninsula, in an era in which some U.P. counties are reporting very high unemployment rates.

In the U.P., there are 15,166 direct healthcare jobs, and 4,961 of those are in Marquette County. Marquette General Hospital provides one out of six healthcare jobs in the U.P.

Medical outmigration to Wisconsin is literally transferring jobs from the U.P. to another state. Cutting out-of-state patient outmigration by half would create in excess of 400 healthcare jobs in the region. Our employees take pride in delivering quality healthcare within the community they love. There is no out-of-state substitution for neighbors caring for neighbors.

SHP pledges to fight to secure and create additional healthcare jobs for the Upper Peninsula.

What can you do?

By staying in the U.P. for healthcare, you are receiving quality care, close to home; saving time and money; helping to secure and create local healthcare jobs; and helping to improve access to specialty care throughout the U.P.

In addition, ask yourself these questions:

  • Will creating jobs in Wisconsin by eliminating them in my community affect my livelihood?
  • Will it affect my options for quality care close to home?
  • Will it affect my child’s ability to find a job and raise his or her family in the U.P.?

SHP offers the quality + cost + jobs solution.  That solution is not just preferable, but absolutely essential to our future as a viable, thriving region.
